Zero-Click Search

A zero-click search is one where the user gets what they wanted without leaving the results page. Featured snippets, knowledge panels, weather cards, currency conversion, and AI-generated summaries all resolve the query in place.

The pattern is not new, but its share has grown, and independent clickstream studies have tracked the shift for several years. For sites built on definitional or quick-fact queries the effect is direct: impressions hold or rise while clicks flatten.

The measurement consequence is that click-through rate stops being a clean quality signal. A page that loses clicks because Google now answers the question above it is not a page that got worse. Reading impressions, average position, and clicks together tells a more honest story than clicks alone.

The strategic response splits by intent. Queries with a real task behind them still send traffic, so commercial, comparison, and tool pages deserve the investment. Pure definition pages are worth keeping for coverage and internal linking while being judged on assisted conversions and brand visibility rather than sessions.
